If you haven't seen the latest polling analysis, check out the charts on 1996 vs 2007.
The similarities are startling - it's really not looking good for the Coalition.

2_iranIran:
Rudd has vowed to bring the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad before the International Court of Justice - article here.

Seems a bit silly and impractical to me - perhaps a little grand-standing to appease the Jewish lobby which is currently asking both Rudd & the PM for their viewpoints on certain issues (couldn't find the article, but it was mentioned in the Herald yesterday). Either way, it's really quite benign when compared to Howard's supposed support for surgical strikes on Iran.

Downer dismisses Rudd's proposition as a 'stunt' and, for once, I have to agree with him as far as its practicality. However, this isn't just a case of the pot calling the kettle black. This is the dark side of the moon comparing itself to a piece of coal. I'm still surprised that this drivel manages to meander its way out of his mouth:

"He's just pulling a stunt here, and if he tried to do that in government of course it would be treated by the international community as nothing more than a domestic stunt and it would embarrass Australia."

Oh right. Like Tampa (children overboard). Like our treatment of child refugees, which was found to contravene the human rights charter. Like refusing to sign the Kyoto protocol (god only knows what political mileage they aimed to garner from that stunt).

2_navyNaval Debacle:
This is only very loosely linked to Federal politics - but I just had to mention it for the pure insanity factor - "SAILORS aboard  HMAS Kanimbla have "showered in diesel" and been told not to touch the ship's drinking water due to several contaminations, Navy sources say". Article here.

Basically the story is that there were a couple of cracked fresh-water tanks on the Kanimbla that meant the water got contaminated. Upon arriving at the docks in Sydney, a "team of sailors was “ordered” to go to Bunnings Warehouse and buy a rainwater tank to store a new supply of fresh water."

Ok, now it's starting to sound a bit ridiculous. What kind of patch up shoddy job are they running in the navy? Go to Bunnings to buy the water tank? Isn't that sort of thing supposed to be looked after by the Naval repair yard?

The story gets more ridiculous with "a Defence spokeswoman said comment was being sought from the ship’s commanders, but there were difficulties communicating with the Kanimbla which is at sea.".

Come again? Difficulties communicating with the Kanimbla because it's at sea? What in Christ's name are they on about? This is an Australian Navy vessel. Of course it's at sea. That's what ships do. One would hope they the Navy can communicate with their ships while at see, wouln't you? If not, what kind of military does this country have?

The Election Date:
The election is looking increasingly likely to be called this weekend, in favour of a November 24 or December 1 election. According to The Age , ad bookings on behalf of the Federal government in the papers dry up this Sunday. When an election is called, all government advertising must be put on hold. Howard again reiterate d that the election date will be sometime between now and early december.

A poll has been released showing that Australians have lost faith in the USA's ability to manage international affairs with the level of confidence almost halving over 6 years from 66% in 2001 to 37% today.

Heffernan's Latest Trainwreck:
Ah Heffo, another polly we can always rely to help the Liberal party sink even deeper into the politics of fear. From the man that brought us comments on Gillard's 'deliberately barren' state we now have him beeing quoted in this week's Bulletin as "warning that climate change will lead to a possible invasion of Australia by Asians looking for water."

Well at least now he's accepting that climate change is a real and present threat. Today he denied that the report, however. The Bulletin's editor-in-chief John Lehmann defended the article, saying that they had a recording of the interview.

To be fair to this antideluvian troglodite of a politician, the head of the AFP, Mike Keelty, suggested as much in his speech on climate change earlier this week.

 African Refugee Intake:
The Federal government has announced that "no more Africans would be allowed into Australia under the humanitarian refugee program until next winter, and added there were no guarantees any Africans would be accepted in the next intake." - article here .

More refugee posturing - perhaps trying to wedge Labor? It's a poor wedge and Rudd is smart enough not to take the bait.

The Australian (Janet Albrechtsen):
Janet Albrechtsen writes an editorial for The Australian today , with the headline 'Harden up, girly-boy, it's time to be tested". She essentially calls on the Liberals to bring on more negative campaigning in order to "probing [sic] Labor's claim to being a better alternative government."

Most of it is her usual twaddle - again talking about Rudd's gaffe, with no mention of Costello's earlier stuff-up during the day as well as Howard's earlier in the year - not to mention Downer's sorry attempt to cheat on Lateline (he had a sheet in front of him with the tax scales).

She ends with "let me offer Rudd the same advice I gave Latham three years ago. Dry your eyes, princess."
